Learning Rationale: This lesson will see students communicating with students from their sister-school in China. Prior to the Skype call, students will develop a set of questions around the inquiry line of “How do you use technology in your schooling and daily life?” Students will then create a Venn diagram that details the differences and similarities between our two cultures technological engagement.
Lesson Goals: Students will have a thorough understanding about the differences in schooling between Australia and China. Students will also begin to see how technology use differs and how this may influence on your daily life.

Lesson Resources:
Smartboard and device that enable Skype to connect
Student’s individual devices (or one to use between a small group)
Venn Diagram work page - http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/venn_diagrams/
Lesson Outline
Students prepare questions in preparation for the upcoming Skype conversation with the school’s Chinese Sister School - Dongzhou PS in Haimen, Jiangsu.
Questions follow the theme of “How has digital technology helped the way we connect with the world?” particularly regarding the differences education and technology use.
Connect via Skype on the Smartboard and begin conversation with the class.
During the call allow students to share their questions and if possible send individual students off to have smaller group conversations with another group from China.
At the completion of the call students will work collaboratively to create two Venn diagrams on the following website http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/venn_diagrams/
Students will save and upload their Venn diagrams to Edmodo, and also email their work to student’s part of the inquiry investigation.
Students will also create a post on Edmodo responding to “how does the difference or similarity in technology use to the students in China influence on your daily life?”
Assessment Opportunity: As students complete their Venn diagram an opportunity arises for teacher to perform as formative assessment on how students are able to compare and connect the differences in Chinese schooling.

SAMR ANALYSIS
- Skype is most definitely comes under redefinition in the SAMR model. There is no non-digital substitute that could realistically provide face-to-face contact with a sister-school in China like Skype does. The closest substitute to this would have been sending letters, a far inferior method.
- The use of the online Venn diagram within this lesson is an example substitution. We have used the online version as it provides student with the opportunity to add it to their Edmodo page, which is a collection of all their learning tasks throughout this unit.
